![]() Plus she makes a ton of Reddit and Star Trek references, so this sub may appreciate that as well.Įdit: thanks for my first ever gold. I can’t help thinking about how much Sam could benefit from reading and discussing this book. It’s concise, has solid reasoning, engaging examples, and practical solutions. Rationality, belief formation, effective dialogue, humility, epistemic confidence, updating your opinions, seeing the other side’s perspective, and keeping your identity small are some topics covered (from memory). I’m 3/4 of the way through Julia Galef’s new book, The Scout Mindset, and it’s wonderful. This is nothing new, but most felt closely related: thin skinned, reactionary, intellectually dishonest, and misrepresentation, for example. Islam and the Future of Tolerance (with Maajid Nawaz)Ĭhecking into this sub after a week or two and I’m seeing multiple top posts discussing Sam’s recent perceived pitfalls. Although she doesn't praise them, Galef gives a lot of attention to billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates, who are all pretty awful people who don't deserve the attention.A subreddit dedicated to discussion about Sam Harris's works, opinions, and speaking appearances, as well as other relevant topics.Įveryone is welcome in this subreddit, regardless of religious or philosophical views.True to the point of the book, Galef is careful to not pick specific sides on any issue she discusses, but rather focuses on how to better understand the issue.I like the author's writing style of beginning with a story, showing how it applies to her point, and then resolving the story later. She also includes dozens of ways a person can asses their own position to check for and correct biases. The author uses several real-world examples of what she's talking about throughout the book which helps ground her thesis in reality, something I always appreciate.I think she does a good job pointing out the benefits and addressing the criticisms. I like how Galef compares the more typical "soldier mindset," where people try to defend their beliefs and attack opposing positions, with "scout mindset," where people try to understand what's going on.I pre-ordered it in audio book format, and started reading it shortly after it was released. Julia Galef became popular in the skeptic community in the late-2000s and grew through the early-2010s, I really liked her lectures, but she disappeared for awhile and then suddenly reappeared in 2021 with her new book.
